Sea Monster designed a narrative-based gamified assessment to support the recruitment needs of a global consulting firm.

In the game, users are immersed in situations whereby their core values and abilities organically emerge through game play to make the assessment of candidates more accurate and reliable.

Reimagine psychometric recruitment testing to improve effectiveness.

After finding that the Westernised style of measurement was not always ideally suited to test the capabilities of their 200 000+ employees situated across 157 countries. the innovation team of a global consulting firm tasked Sea Monster with reviewing its psychometric recruitment testing process.

The goal was to utilise the principles of gamification to create an experience that would cut across cultures and literacy challenges and increase engagement and assessment accuracy for new employees.

Recruitment testing delivered through a choose-your-own-adventure story.

Utilising the principles of gamification, Sea Monster developed Ascender - a retro, sci-fi themed, narrative-based gamified assessment, underpinned by the science of Spiral Dynamics.

The experience sends applicants on an adventure to save humanity where the player is the hero, and the decisions they take while playing the game affect the storyline. The challenges set out in the game are designed to evaluate both the applicant’s values as well as their capabilities.

Not only was the cost of development on Ascender less than 50% of their current internal spend on their traditional assessment tool, after implementing the Ascender game into their organisation in January 2017, the game achieved a 90% approval rate for the format and 100% engagement levels from employee applicants. Ascender has also gone on to be validated as a psychometric tool.
